The Portage Lake area has become famous for fine hunting, fishing and snowmobiling. The lake itself abounds with fish. Many other lakes and streams in the nearby great northern Maine woods can also provide a sportsman with many hours of enjoyment. Deer, bear and moose have always been favorites with hunters, and 200 pound plus buck deer are not uncommon. The Allagash Wilderness Waterway is only about an hour's drive along good woods road from Dean's Motor Lodge.

Portage Lake offers sheltered picnic tables and a beach that is popular with the campers and general public. The lake is large enough for motor boating, canoeing, sailing and a lot of good, fast water skiing.

Snowmobilers rendezvous at the lodge and then strike off to enjoy more of the well-groomed ITS trail system, or race across the frozen lake. Cross-country skiing is rapidly becoming popular in northern Maine and Dean's Motor Lodge is the ideal spot for a warm respite.
